About Ag Literacy Week

Tennessee Agriculture industry leaders have established the week before Thanksgiving as Tennessee Ag Literacy Week.

We strongly believe the future success of agriculture depends upon developing an ag literate society- with individuals who understands and can communicate the source and value of agriculture as it affects our quality of life. With the majority of children today 5 to 6 generations removed from living and working on farms, we must provide that farm connection for the next generation.  It is crucial that children and adults recognize and appreciate the vital role agriculture plays in our way of live.

Tennessee Ag Literacy Week focuses on connecting volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms for the purpose of increasing student knowledge about agriculture.  It is an opportunity for Tennessee agriculturalists (farmers, ranchers, industry representatives, youth agriculture organizations, and others supportive of agriculture) to be the face of agriculture in classrooms across the state.  They will not only read the Ag accurate books, but they will tell the students about their farms, programs or connections to agriculture.

How Ag Literacy Week Works

In celebration of Tennessee agriculture, volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to students. Students and teachers will also benefit from hands-on lessons and receive follow up activities. In 2022, nearly 11,000 students were reached in all 95 counties of Tennessee.

2023 Ag Literacy Week is November 12-18, 2023

Each Ag Literacy session takes about 30 minutes per classroom.

1. Agriculture volunteers work with their county coordinators to set up visits to their local schools.

2. Volunteers read to students in elementary classrooms.

3. Following the reading, volunteers may conduct an activity with students and share their experiences about agriculture.

All activity materials are prepared by Tennessee Farm Bureau Agriculture in the Classroom.
